6-channel boost LED driver for backlight
The Texas Instruments TPS61183RTJT is a 6-channel DC-DC boost regulator designed specifically for LED backlight applications. It integrates six current-sink outputs, each rated for 30 mA, with a total output voltage capability up to 38 V — enough to drive multiple series-connected LEDs per channel in a typical 7- to 15-inch LCD panel. PWM dimming is supported directly, allowing the backlight brightness to be controlled by an external PWM signal without additional circuitry. The switching frequency can be set between 300 kHz and 1 MHz, giving the designer flexibility to trade off inductor size against efficiency and EMI.
Input range and thermal envelope
The input supply range spans 4.5 V to 24 V, covering standard 5 V, 12 V, and 24 V rails found in automotive, industrial, and consumer backlight systems. Packaged in a 20-pin WFQFN with exposed pad (4 mm × 4 mm), the TPS61183RTJT relies on the pad soldered to a PCB copper plane for thermal dissipation.
