What the 10A switch rating means for your rail
The TPS61178RNWT integrates a 10A switch — that's the peak current the internal FET can handle cycle-to-cycle. For a 5V-to-12V boost at 2A output, the inductor peak current runs around 6A; the 10A ceiling gives you headroom for transients without needing an external FET. Switching frequency is adjustable from 200kHz to 2.2MHz. Lower frequency buys better efficiency at heavy loads; higher frequency shrinks the inductor footprint — a trade-off you set with one resistor.
Supply range and output limits
Input range runs from 2.7V to 20V, so it can start from a single lithium cell or a 12V rail. Output adjusts from a 4.5V minimum up to 20V — the same ceiling as the input max, which simplifies the inductor voltage rating. Synchronous rectification is built in — no external Schottky needed, which saves a diode and cuts the layout loop area.
