Boost LED driver with a 38 V ceiling
The Texas Instruments TPS61165DRVT is a boost-converter LED driver built for backlight and automotive lighting applications. Its single-channel output climbs from 3 V up to 38 V, which means a string of eight to ten series white LEDs at typical forward voltages — no second boost stage needed.
1.2 A switch current — sizing the inductor
That limits the output power to roughly 4–5 W at 38 V with typical conversion efficiency, so this part fits small-to-medium backlight panels (7–10 inch displays) or automotive cluster lighting. For higher current strings, an external-switch boost topology would be needed.
PWM dimming without audible noise
Dimming is controlled via a PWM input on the CTRL pin. The internal PWM engine modulates the LED current at a frequency the designer selects — typically 200 Hz to 1 kHz — keeping the inductor out of audible resonance. This matters for automotive cabin lighting where a 100 Hz buzz would be noticed.
