Boost regulator for backlight — what the ratings mean
The TPS61162AYFFR is a step-up (boost) DC-DC regulator from Texas Instruments, purpose-built for driving LED backlight strings in displays. Its 1.2 MHz switching frequency lets the design use a small inductor and ceramic capacitors, keeping the total solution footprint compact. Two independent outputs, each rated for 30 mA, can drive separate LED strings — useful for split-panel backlights or dual-display products where the brightness of each zone needs independent control. The output voltage range spans 2.7 V to 27 V, which covers a typical 6- to 8-LED series string in a small-to-medium LCD panel. The 2.7 V minimum input matches a single-cell Li-ion battery near its end-of-discharge voltage.
Dimming flexibility and temperature grade
Both analog and PWM dimming are supported, giving the system designer a choice: analog dimming for continuous brightness adjustment without switching noise, or PWM dimming for a wider dimming ratio and better colour consistency at low brightness levels.
Housed in a 9-bump DSBGA (0.4 mm pitch typical), the TPS61162AYFFR demands a controlled solder-paste stencil and a reflow profile matched to the board thickness. Internal switches are integrated, so no external MOSFET is needed — the inductor, input/output caps, and feedback resistors complete the regulator loop.
