Boost LED driver with internal switch — TPS61040DBVR
The TPS61040DBVR is a DC-DC boost regulator from Texas Instruments designed for LED backlight applications. It integrates the power switch internally, operates at a 1 MHz switching frequency, and delivers a regulated output up to 28 V from a supply range of 1.8 V to 6 V. PWM dimming is supported directly, making it suitable for display backlight brightness control in portable devices. The single-channel output can source up to 350 mA through the internal switch.
What the 28 V output and 1 MHz switching mean for your BOM
The 28 V output ceiling lets you drive a string of 6–8 white LEDs in series from a single Li-ion cell. That voltage headroom covers the forward drop stack plus the sense resistor overhead without needing a second boost stage. A 1 MHz switching frequency lets the layout engineer use a 4.7 µH to 10 µH inductor — smaller than the 22 µH+ needed by lower-frequency boost controllers. That shrinks the inductor footprint and height, which matters in thin-profile backlight modules.
