The TPS54231D is a non-synchronous buck converter from TI's Eco-Mode™ series, delivering up to 2 A continuous output from a 3.5 V to 28 V input rail. Switching at 570 kHz, the part balances inductor size and switching loss: the frequency is high enough to keep the LC filter small, low enough that the non-synchronous topology doesn't burn excessive gate-drive power. The 150°C junction rating means this regulator can sit in a warm enclosure or near a hot processor without derating the output current.
Input range and output flexibility for industrial rails
The 3.5 V minimum input lets the TPS54231D start from a 5 V rail with margin, while the 28 V maximum covers 24 V industrial buses and unregulated supplies. The 0.8 V feedback reference allows sub-1 V cores, though the 2 A output limits how low you can go before the duty cycle pinches — check the minimum on-time in the datasheet for very low Vout. Because it lacks synchronous rectification, the external Schottky diode handles the freewheeling current. The diode selection matters for efficiency and thermal stress: use a 40 V or 60 V Schottky rated for at least 2 A forward current, placed close to the SW pin and output capacitor to minimise the switching-node loop.
