Product details

600kHz synchronous buck controller for point-of-load rails

Texas Instruments TPS40041DRBR is a single-output step-down (buck) voltage-mode controller switching at 600 kHz. The fixed frequency means the output LC filter corner stays predictable across the line — no spread-spectrum or frequency foldback to complicate the ripple budget. The 95% max duty cycle leaves headroom for low-dropout operation when the input rail sags near the output target. Synchronous rectification is integrated — no external Schottky catch diode needed. The internal driver handles the high-side and low-side N-channel FETs; the controller's own quiescent draw is low enough for always-on rails in battery-powered gear. Temperature grade is -40°C to 125°C junction — industrial and automotive under-hood capable. The junction rating means the die itself can hit 125°C even if the ambient is lower; derate the output current based on the thermal resistance of the 8-SON exposed-pad package.

Package and board integration — 8-SON with exposed pad

The TPS40041DRBR is supplied in an 8-VDFN Exposed Pad package, also designated 8-SON (3x3 mm). Mounting is surface-mount only. The small 3x3 mm footprint keeps the controller tight on dense boards, but the narrow pitch (0.65 mm typical for 8-SON) demands careful solder paste stencil aperture design to avoid bridging. The TR format is standard for pick-and-place volume; CT suits prototype or low-quantity builds.
