Power mux for multi-rail systems
The TPS22980RGPR is a 1:1 high-side power multiplexer from Texas Instruments, designed to switch a single load between two supply rails or to provide a dedicated power path with integrated protection. It handles a load voltage from 3 V to 19.8 V and delivers up to 500 mA continuous output, suiting 5 V, 12 V, and 19 V peripheral rails in industrial and consumer equipment. The device integrates adjustable current limiting, over-temperature shutdown, and reverse-current blocking — reducing the need for discrete protection components on the board.
Protection and thermal budget
The adjustable current limit lets you set the trip threshold via an external resistor, matching the load's inrush and steady-state demand without oversizing the switch. Over-temperature protection shuts down the output if the die exceeds the safe junction limit, which is critical when the 20-QFN (4x4) exposed pad is soldered to a limited copper area. Reverse-current protection prevents back-feed from the output to the input when the switch is off — important in dual-supply or battery-backup topologies where the load rail may stay live.
It is ROHS3 compliant, with no exemptions that would restrict its use in standard lead-free assembly processes.
