Rail-to-rail ESD clamp for HDMI and Ethernet ports
The Texas Instruments TPD4S009DRYR is a 4-channel steering (rail-to-rail) ESD protection diode array designed to shunt transient energy on high-speed differential pairs. It routes the surge current to the supply or ground rail, keeping the protected IC's pins within a safe voltage window. With 4 unidirectional channels, it covers two differential pairs — exactly what HDMI and Ethernet interfaces need. The 5.5V reverse standoff voltage sits above 3.3V and 5V logic rails, so normal signal levels pass unclipped. Peak pulse power is rated at 25W, which is sufficient for IEC 61000-4-2 level 4 contact strikes (8 kV) when the board layout keeps the trace inductance low.
The 25W peak pulse power rating (8/20 µs waveform) tells you how much transient energy the part can absorb in a single event before the silicon gives way. For HDMI 2.0 and Gigabit Ethernet, the energy in a typical ESD strike is well under 25W if the clamping voltage stays low. The trade-off: the 6-SON package (1.45 mm x 1.0 mm) has limited thermal mass, so repetitive high-energy pulses (like those from a cable discharge event on a long HDMI run) can accumulate heat. For most production designs — set-top boxes, monitors, industrial cameras — the 25W rating gives comfortable margin. If your system sees repeated strikes near the 8 kV level, consider adding a TVS with higher pulse energy on the connector side.
