Automotive ESD protection in a 0402 footprint
The 0402 (1006 Metric) surface-mount package fits tight PCB layouts where board space is at a premium, and the 12 pF capacitance at 1 MHz is low enough to keep high-speed signals like CAN FD or USB 2.0 clean without adding signal-integrity headaches.
With a 9 V reverse standoff voltage (max) and a typical clamping voltage of 14 V at the peak pulse current, this part clamps fast enough to protect 5 V and 3.3 V logic rails from ESD transients. The 90 W peak pulse power rating (8/20 µs waveform) handles the energy from a standard IEC 61000-4-2 ESD strike or a short-duration surge on a 12 V automotive battery line.
The 0402 package is small, so rework with hot air is straightforward: low thermal mass means it heats up quickly, but that also means you need to watch the airflow so you don't blow it off the board. Pin 1 orientation is marked on the package — a small bar on the top — so double-check alignment before reflow or the bidirectional clamping still works but the part sits cockeyed.
