I²C volume, DRC, and AGC — all on the same bus
I²C control gives the host processor digital volume adjustment, dynamic range compression (DRC), and automatic gain control (AGC) over a single two-wire bus — no external potentiometers or analog-level shift resistors needed. The DRC and AGC loop keeps the output from clipping on loud transients while boosting quiet passages, which matters when the speaker is small and the enclosure resonance amplifies distortion — the amplifier compensates before the ear hears it. Differential inputs reject common-mode noise picked up on the audio traces between the codec and the amplifier — a real advantage when the PCB layout forces the analog signal path past a switching regulator or digital bus.
9-DSBGA — the footprint matters
Housed in a 9-bump DSBGA (0.4mm pitch, 1.5mm x 1.5mm body), the TPA2028D1YZFR saves board area but demands a controlled solder-paste stencil and a reflow profile that matches the JEDEC MSL-1 moisture sensitivity — no bake required if unsealed within the floor-life window. Short-circuit and thermal protection are built in — the output stage shuts down before the die temperature exceeds the silicon limit, then auto-recovers when the junction cools. No external clamp diodes or PTC resettable fuse needed on the speaker output.
