The TMS320F28034PAGQ: The 60 MHz clock is enough for most field-oriented control loops at switching frequencies up to 20 kHz, but if you're pushing higher PWM rates or more sensor channels, the 100 MHz F280041PZQR sibling is the next step up.
Supply rails and logic-level reality
The I/O pins are 3.3 V tolerant, but the VDD pin needs its own clean 1.8 V-ish regulator. On a repair bench, the first thing I check is that 1.8 V rail; if it's drooping below 1.71 V, the core browns out and the part stalls. The internal POR and brown-out detect help, but a sloppy supply is the most common failure signature on these Piccolos. The 33 I/O pins are 3.3 V logic compatible, so you can interface directly with standard 3.3 V peripherals (CAN transceivers, SPI sensors, UART bridges) without level shifters. Just don't feed 5 V into any pin — the absolute maximum is 4.6 V, and the 3.3 V tolerance doesn't extend to 5 V.
