100 MHz C28x core for real-time control loops
The TMS320F28015NMFA: Its 32 KB of on-chip Flash and 6K x 16 RAM are sized for commutation tables, PI loops, and a modest CAN or UART stack — enough for a single-axis servo or a two-phase interleaved PFC, but tight if you're layering on an EtherCAT stack or large lookup tables. The 16-channel 12-bit ADC samples synchronously with the PWM module, which is the key architectural feature for current-sense timing in field-oriented control.
100-NFBGA package — rework and layout notes
This part comes in a 100-ball LFBGA (10x10 mm body, 0.8 mm pitch) — surface-mount only, no socket option. The 0.8 mm pitch is hand-reworkable with a hot-air station and a decent stencil, but you'll want a pre-bake at 125°C for 24 hours if the moisture-barrier bag has been open longer than the MSL floor life. The 35 GPIOs fan out on the perimeter balls; the center thermal pad needs a via-stitched ground plane under the BGA to pull heat out. Without that, junction temperature climbs fast above 400 mA continuous core current.
The internal oscillator gets you booting without an external crystal, but for CAN or PWM with tight timing, plan on an external clock source.
No last-time-buy notices or end-of-life announcements are on file. For new designs, the F28004x series offers a pin-compatible upgrade path with more memory and peripherals if your firmware outgrows the 32 KB Flash ceiling.
