What this shunt reference does on your board
It holds a regulated output from 1.24 V up to 6 V, set by two external resistors. The ±0.5% tolerance gives you a tight voltage window without laser trimming on the assembly line — useful for biasing an ADC reference input or setting the trip point in a power-supply feedback loop. It sinks up to 15 mA of cathode current, which is enough to drive an optocoupler LED or pull down a resistive divider. The minimum cathode current is 100 µA, so the part stays in regulation even at light load.
Package and rework — TO-92-3 plays nice with a soldering iron
The TO-92-3 is a through-hole package with three leads. It stands up to repeated soldering cycles — no hot-air station needed, no hidden pads. The leads are long enough to bend into a perfboard or socket, and the plastic body takes a heat-shrink sleeve if you need to insulate it after install.
