Output current and cathode current — sizing the bias resistor

The 15 mA maximum output current sets the load the shunt can sink directly. For higher loads, the reference drives an external pass transistor. The 80 µA minimum cathode current defines the bias resistor value: R_bias = (V_in - V_ref) / I_bias, where I_bias must exceed 80 µA to keep the reference in regulation. At 80 µA quiescent, the reference adds negligible power dissipation in battery-powered or energy-harvesting nodes — the bias resistor dominates the loss.
