Adjustable shunt reference — 1.24 V to 6 V output
The Texas Instruments TLV431AIDBVR is a low-voltage adjustable shunt regulator that serves as a precision voltage reference or error amplifier in power supplies, battery chargers, and DC-DC converters. Its output is set with two external resistors anywhere from 1.24 V up to 6 V.
80 µA cathode current — low quiescent for battery gear
The minimum cathode current is 80 µA, which means the device stays in regulation with very little bias current. In a battery-powered design that idles most of the time, that 80 µA floor is the penalty for keeping the reference alive — lower than many fixed-output shunt regulators. Output current capability is 15 mA, enough to drive the optocoupler LED in a secondary-side feedback loop or to bias a small signal chain. The shunt architecture means the load current plus the cathode current must always exceed 80 µA to maintain regulation.
SOT-23-5 footprint — hand-solderable with care
Housed in an SC-74A / SOT-753 package, which is the same 5-pin SOT-23 footprint as the industry-standard TL431 in SOT-23-5. The 0.95 mm pin pitch is fine but manageable with a fine-tipped iron and flux — no hot-air gun required for rework. Not rated for under-hood or extended industrial beyond 85°C.
