The reference sets its output voltage with two external resistors to any value between 2.495 V and 36 V. The ±1% tolerance on the internal reference means the divider ratio determines the output accuracy — a 1% divider keeps the total error under 2% across the temperature range.
Package and rework — SOT-23-5 on the hot-air station
The SOT-23-5 (SC-74A) package is a standard five-lead small-outline transistor footprint. The 0.95 mm pin pitch and exposed pad on the bottom centre make hand rework straightforward — a hot-air station at 300°C for 30 seconds lifts the part cleanly, and the pad layout is forgiving for manual alignment. That covers most indoor equipment, office gear, and appliance-level designs. For extended industrial or automotive environments, the TL432B-grade or AEC-Q100-qualified variants are the appropriate choice.
For dual-sourcing or a pin-compatible second source, the TL431 family shares the same three-terminal shunt architecture and the same SOT-23-5 footprint — the TL431ACDBZR is a direct drop-in with the same ±1% tolerance and 100 mA output. The difference is the TL431's reference voltage is 2.495 V fixed; the TL432 is the adjustable-output variant with no internal divider. Both are active and interchangeable in the same PCB layout.
