Current ratings and bias design
The shunt can sink up to 15 mA at the cathode while regulating the reference voltage. In a typical feedback circuit, the designer picks the cathode resistor so that the current through the device stays between 600 µA and 15 mA across all load and line conditions. Dropping below 600 µA risks losing regulation; exceeding 15 mA pushes the junction temperature beyond the rated limit at high ambient.
For BOM lines that require a second-source option, the LM4132AMF-4.1/NOPB is a series reference with tighter tolerance (±0.05%) and fixed 4.096 V output, but it is not a direct pin-for-pin replacement — the TL431 is a shunt topology, the LM4132 is a series topology. If the design needs a shunt reference with AEC-Q100 qualification, this part is the current-production choice.
