Precision shunt reference for the BOM line
What sets this 'BQ' grade apart is the ±0.5% tolerance on the internal reference, tighter than the standard TL431's 1% or 2% grades. That half-percent window matters when the output rail or ADC reference needs to hold its value across temperature and load without a trim pot.
The 100 mA output current rating is the maximum cathode current the device can sink while maintaining regulation. In practice, the shunt current is set by the bias resistor from the supply — pick a resistor that keeps the cathode current above the 700 µA minimum (the quiescent floor) and below 100 mA at the worst-case supply voltage. Below 700 µA the reference loses regulation; above 100 mA you risk thermal runaway in the SOT-23-5 package. The ±0.5% tolerance is specified at 25°C; expect some additional drift over the full temperature range, but the BQ grade keeps the window tighter than the standard part.
