The shunt can sink up to 100 mA, which covers most bias-supply and error-amplifier loads in offline flyback converters and battery chargers. Minimum cathode current is 700 µA — below that the reference may not regulate; the design should always pull at least that much through the cathode to keep the bandgap active.
