±0.5% tolerance — the accuracy tier that decides the BOM line
That tolerance is the selection differentiator: it holds the reference voltage at 2.495 V to within ±0.5%, which is tight enough for most closed-loop power-supply feedback paths without an external trim pot. The standard TL431B grade is ±0.5% at 25°C; the non-B grade is ±2% or ±1%, so this part is the accuracy tier for designs that need regulation better than 1% but do not require the premium 0.4% or 0.2% grades.
2.495 V to 36 V — adjustable output envelope
The reference sets a minimum output of 2.495 V (the internal bandgap) and can be programmed up to 36 V with two external resistors. This covers the common secondary-side regulation voltages in AC-DC converters (3.3 V, 5 V, 12 V, 24 V) and isolated DC-DC feedback loops. The 100 mA output current and 600 µA minimum cathode current define the load-driving and bias-current budget: the cathode must sink at least 600 µA to keep the reference in regulation, and the output can source up to 100 mA into the optocoupler LED or error-amplifier network.
