100 mA cathode current — the drive budget for the shunt
The TL431BCDBVRE4 can sink up to 100 mA continuous through the cathode. That 100 mA is the total current budget: the sum of the bias current through the resistor divider and the load current the shunt pulls to ground. A typical 10 kΩ divider from a 5 V rail draws about 0.5 mA, leaving 99.5 mA for the load — enough for most low-power regulation and monitoring circuits. The minimum cathode current to maintain regulation is 600 µA; designs must ensure the operating point never drops below that or the output drifts out of spec.
That is the commercial-grade window — fine for benchtop instruments, office power supplies, and consumer electronics. Not rated for motor drives, outdoor telecom cabinets, or any environment that sees freezing or sustained heat. If the BOM calls for industrial or automotive temperature range, this variant will not hold the ±0.5% tolerance at the extremes.
