Product details

2.495V shunt reference in a SOT-89-3

It can sink up to 100 mA and requires only 700 µA cathode current to regulate. The SOT-89-3 package (TO-243AA) is a surface-mount footprint with a tab that helps pull heat into the board copper — useful when the part is running near its 100 mA ceiling.

The output can be set anywhere from 2.495V up to 36 V using two external resistors. The 700 µA cathode current is the minimum needed to keep the internal error amplifier in its linear region — if the bias resistor lets the cathode current drop below that, the reference voltage drifts. At the other end, the 100 mA output limit is the maximum continuous current the shunt can sink; above that the junction temperature climbs fast in the SOT-89-3.

Temperature range and package reworkability

The SOT-89-3 has a large centre tab that makes hand rework straightforward: preheat the board from the back, hit the tab with hot air, and lift the part clean. The tab is electrically connected to the anode, so no thermal-via trickery is needed — just a solid copper pour under the part.

Frequently asked questions

What package is TL431AIPK available in?

It is a surface-mount package with a centre tab that serves as the anode connection.

What is the cathode current requirement for TL431AIPK?

The minimum cathode current to maintain regulation is 700 µA. Design the bias resistor to deliver at least this current across the full input voltage range and load conditions.
