100 mA output and 700 µA cathode current — load budget and quiescent trade-off
Rated for 100 mA continuous output current, the TL431AIDR can sink enough current to drive optocoupler LEDs in isolated power supplies or to shunt excess current in a series-pass regulator. The minimum cathode current of 700 µA sets the floor for the bias resistor — below that the reference may not regulate. That 700 µA is low enough to keep quiescent loss small in battery-powered circuits, but not as low as the 400 µA min of the TL431B-grade siblings.
8-SOIC package — surface-mount footprint for automated assembly
The surface-mount package suits reflow soldering and automated pick-and-place, and the wide-body option provides better thermal dissipation than the SOT-23 variants when the device is dissipating power at the 100 mA output limit.
