RS-485 transceiver for industrial buses
The Texas Instruments THVD1450DR is a half-duplex RS-485 transceiver in an 8-SOIC package, rated for 50 Mbps data rate and a wide supply range of 3V to 5.5V. It handles one driver and one receiver, with 30 mV of receiver hysteresis to reject bus noise.
At 50 Mbps this part runs RS-485 at the faster end of the standard, supporting high-speed data links like backplane communication or encoder feedback over short cable runs. The half-duplex architecture means you share the pair for transmit and receive, so the firmware needs to manage direction control via a GPIO or a dedicated DE signal. For slower fieldbus protocols (Profibus, Modbus at a few Mbps) the margin is generous.
Supply range: 3V to 5.5V — one part for mixed-voltage boards
The 3V to 5.5V supply range lets the THVD1450DR drop straight into a 3.3V microcontroller design without a level shifter, or sit on a legacy 5V industrial backplane. That single-supply flexibility simplifies the BOM and avoids the extra rail or translator IC. The receiver input common-mode range covers the RS-485 requirement of -7V to 12V, so it handles ground shifts on long cable runs.
