The TCAN1042HGVDRQ1 is a Texas Instruments CAN FD transceiver that pushes the bus to 5 Mbps, five times the classic 1 Mbps CAN 2.0 limit. That data rate matters when your ECU needs to shovel firmware updates or high-resolution sensor data over the same twisted pair without adding a second network. The part handles the faster arbitration phase and the data phase of CAN FD frames natively, so the MCU's CAN FD controller talks directly to the bus pins.
Wide temperature range — not just automotive
The AEC-Q100 qualification is the automotive-grade baseline, but the temperature span is wider than the typical -40°C to 125°C automotive part — useful for any high-reliability design that needs CAN FD.

But if your system sees a cold-crank dip below 4.5 V, the transceiver drops out — the bus goes recessive and the MCU loses the network. The 120 mV receiver hysteresis cleans up noise on a long or electrically noisy bus, reducing bit errors without external filtering.
Package and footprint — 8-SOIC, hand-solderable
In an 8-SOIC package with 1.27 mm pitch, this is a friendly footprint for hand assembly or rework. No exposed pad, no thermal vias — just the eight pins and the usual 0.1 µF decoupling cap near the supply pin. The 3.90 mm body width fits a standard SOIC-8 land pattern.
TI lists the TCAN1042HGVDRQ1 as Active. The base product number TCAN1042 covers a family of CAN FD transceivers with different supply variants and standby modes, so if a future design needs a lower-power sleep mode or a different VIO level, there is a pin-compatible sibling in the same family.
