Open-drain NAND gate for mixed-voltage glue logic
The open-drain output is the key differentiator from a standard NAND — it lets you wire-OR multiple outputs together or shift logic levels by pulling up to a different supply rail. Propagation delay is 3.9 ns at 5 V with a 50 pF load, fast enough for most control and status signals. Quiescent current maxes at 10 µA, so it won't eat into a battery budget.
What the open-drain output buys you on the board
The open-drain output sinks current but cannot source it — the high state is achieved by an external pull-up resistor. This is the classic wired-OR topology: tie the outputs of several open-drain gates together and a single pull-up resistor gives you a logical AND of all inputs. It also simplifies level translation: run the pull-up to a 1.8 V rail while the gate itself runs at 3.3 V, and the output swings to 1.8 V. The output can sink 32 mA, enough to drive an LED or a small relay coil through a transistor.
