Open-drain output: the so-what for your BOM
Because the output is open drain, it can be wired-AND connected with other open-drain outputs on a shared bus. The high-impedance state lets another device drive the line low without contention. The 32 mA sink rating gives you headroom to drive a reasonable fan-out or a small load, but the pull-up resistor value needs to be chosen so the output current stays within that limit when the output is low.
