The Texas Instruments SN74LS96D is a 5-bit parallel-in/parallel-out shift register from the 74LS low-power Schottky logic family. It accepts data on all five inputs simultaneously and presents the stored word on parallel outputs, making it suited for temporary data storage, serial-to-parallel conversion, or pattern generation in TTL-level systems. Typical applications include industrial control logic, data acquisition front-ends, and legacy bus-interface designs where a small-width register is needed.
This removes the last-time-buy pressure that often accompanies older logic families and allows straightforward inclusion in both new designs and legacy-support BOMs.
RoHS non-compliant — plan for leaded assembly
Designs requiring full RoHS conformance will need an exemption or a leaded-assembly line. For high-reliability or aerospace applications where tin whisker risk is a concern, the leaded finish is often preferred.
