8-bit serial-to-parallel shift register in 14-SOIC
The SN74LS164DR is an 8-bit serial-to-parallel shift register from the 74LS series. It accepts serial data on two inputs and shifts it through eight stages, presenting parallel data on eight push-pull outputs. Supply range is 4.75 V to 5.25 V, with a commercial temperature grade of 0°C to 70°C — suited for benchtop instruments, industrial controllers, and peripheral interfaces that stay indoors. Common applications include expanding digital outputs from a microcontroller, driving LED banks, or capturing parallel data from a serial source. The push-pull outputs eliminate the need for external pull-up resistors in most logic-level loads.
If the rail droops under 4.75 V, the shift register may not hold valid logic states.
