What the open-collector output buys you
The SN74LS07DR packs six non-inverting buffers with open-collector outputs rated to sink 40 mA per channel — that is the current path to ground through the output transistor when the input is high, not a push-pull source. Open-collector means the output pulls low actively but floats high, so you wire an external pull-up resistor to whatever voltage the downstream logic or load needs, up to the transistor's breakdown limit. This makes the part a natural fit for driving relays, LEDs, or optocouplers from a 5 V logic rail, or for level-shifting a signal to a higher-voltage bus — the same open-drain topology used in I²C and many control lines. The 74LS family runs on 4.75 V to 5.25 V, so the input thresholds are TTL-compatible and the outputs can be pulled to 15 V or more depending on the external resistor and the transistor rating.
Package and temperature grade for the BOM
Housed in a 14-pin SOIC with 3.90 mm body width, the SN74LS07DR takes the standard narrow SOIC-14 footprint — 1.27 mm pitch, the same land pattern as a 74HC or 74HCT equivalent in the same package. The operating range is 0 °C to 70 °C ambient, which covers commercial and most indoor industrial environments but not automotive or extended-temp applications. Each of the six elements handles one bit, so a single package replaces six discrete open-collector transistors or a pair of smaller buffers. The -DR suffix indicates Tape & Reel packaging, also available as Cut Tape for prototype quantities.
