Do not plan on driving an LED directly or fanning out to more than about ten 74LS inputs — the low-side current is the limiting factor. If you need more drive, look at the 74ALS or 74F variants which offer higher output current. For a simple gate-to-gate connection, this drive level is adequate and keeps power dissipation low.
