Automotive-grade serial-to-parallel expansion
The SN74HCS594QDRQ1 is an 8-bit serial-in, parallel-out shift register from Texas Instruments' 74HCS logic family, qualified to AEC-Q100 for automotive applications. It accepts serial data and shifts it through eight stages, presenting the latched output on eight push-pull lines — a straightforward way to expand GPIO on a microcontroller without adding a dedicated SPI port.
What AEC-Q100 means for the BOM
AEC-Q100 qualification is not a single test — it is a suite of stress and reliability screens (high-temperature operating life, temperature cycling, ESD, latch-up) that the part passes before it ships to automotive OEMs. For a shift register feeding an indicator cluster or a body-control serial bus, that qualification means the part's datasheet limits are backed by PPAP-grade data the OEM auditor will ask for.
