Supply and temperature — what they mean for the BOM
The SN74HC166DR: The 2V minimum supply lets this part operate in low-voltage logic domains (e.g., 2.5V or 1.8V systems) without a separate regulator, though at 2V the propagation delay is longer than at 5V — budget the timing margin if the downstream load has a tight setup-time window. The 85°C upper limit is the ambient, not the junction — in a 70°C enclosure with no forced air, the self-heating from the push-pull output driving a 50pF load at 20MHz adds roughly 10°C, keeping the die within the rated envelope. ROHS3 compliance covers the full substance restriction list including the four phthalates — no exemption declarations needed for EU-market equipment.
No single-source risk — the 74HC logic family has multiple second-source vendors, though pin-compatible alternatives vary by package and temperature grade.
