Active production – no obsolescence watch needed
For BOM planning, this part does not trigger a lifecycle risk flag — it is a standard 74HC logic device with stable supply. ROHS3 compliant, so it meets current European and global restriction requirements without an exemption expiry concern.
What the 3:8 decoder does on your board
The SN74HC138DR is a single 3-to-8 line decoder/demultiplexer. It takes a 3-bit binary address on its select inputs and asserts one of eight active-low outputs. Typical uses include memory-chip select decoding, address demultiplexing in microcontroller systems, or routing a data signal to one of eight destinations. The 2V to 6V supply range lets it bridge 3.3V and 5V logic domains without a level translator — a practical advantage when mixing a 3.3V MCU with 5V peripherals. Output current capability is 5.2 mA sink and 5.2 mA source, enough to drive standard CMOS logic inputs or low-power LEDs directly. For heavier loads, buffer the outputs.
Temperature grade and package – fit for industrial environments
The commercial-grade 0°C to 70°C parts would not survive these environments. Housed in a 16-SOIC package with 0.154-inch body width and 1.27 mm pin pitch. The footprint matches standard SOIC-16 land patterns; no special fan-out or via-in-pad is required. The surface-mount form factor suits automated pick-and-place assembly.
Sourcing and supply – multi-source reach
The SN74HC138DR is a standard TI 74HC logic part with broad distributor coverage. For BOM quantities, we source per RFQ — confirm current lead time and pricing at quote time. No single-source risk: the 74HC138 function is second-sourced by multiple manufacturers, so qualifying an alternate is straightforward if supply tightens.
