The maximum propagation delay is 17 ns at 6V with a 50 pF load. That translates to a practical toggle rate around 20-30 MHz in a typical 5V system — fast enough for address decoding, clock gating, and control signal conditioning on a 10-20 MHz bus, but not for high-speed memory interfaces or 100 MHz+ clock trees. If your design needs sub-10 ns delays, consider the 74LVC or 74AUC families in surface-mount packages.
5.2 mA output drive — sizing for fan-out and LED loads
Both the output high and low current are rated at 5.2 mA. That's enough to drive up to 10 standard 74HC inputs (fan-out of 10) or a single low-current LED with a series resistor. For heavier loads — relays, optocouplers, or long cables — buffer the output with a transistor or a dedicated line driver.
For new designs, the surface-mount sibling SN74HC08DR (SOIC-14) offers a smaller footprint while keeping the same logic function and electrical ratings.
