Six inverters in one DIP — propagation delay and drive capability
The SN74F04N packs six independent inverter gates into a single 14-pin DIP. Each gate accepts one input and delivers the inverted output. The 5 ns max propagation delay at 5 V with a 50 pF load sets the timing budget for the logic path — at 5 V supply this is a fast-enough edge for most through-hole TTL designs running below 50 MHz. Output drive is specified as 1 mA source and 20 mA sink. The 20 mA sink capability is the stronger leg — it can drive a standard TTL fan-out of 10 loads or switch a small LED directly. The 1 mA source side limits high-side drive; use a pull-up resistor if the load requires more than 1 mA at logic high.
Supply voltage and temperature — standard 5 V TTL envelope
Input logic thresholds are 0.8 V low and 2 V high, making it directly compatible with 5 V CMOS and other 74F-family outputs. Quiescent current draw is 4.2 mA max — negligible in a 5 V logic rail budget, so no special decoupling beyond the standard 0.1 µF per package is required.
