Hex inverter, 5ns propagation, 14-SOIC
The SN74F04DR is a hex inverter from Texas Instruments' 74F family — six independent NOT gates in a single 14-SOIC package. Each channel inverts a single input, making it a workhorse for signal conditioning, oscillator building, and logic-level inversion in 5V systems. Propagation delay is 5ns max at 5V with a 50pF load, which means it keeps up with clock rates well into the tens of megahertz without introducing timing skew that would trip up a synchronous bus. Output drive is asymmetric — 1mA sourcing, 20mA sinking — a common trait in this logic family. The high sink current lets it drive LED indicators or pull down a bus line directly; the source side is lighter, so plan for a pull-up if you need to drive a high-impedance input fast.
Supply and thresholds — 5V TTL-compatible
Input logic thresholds are 0.8V low and 2V high — TTL-compatible, meaning it reliably reads the output of older 5V logic and most 3.3V parts that drive above 2V. Not rated for automotive or extended industrial ambient, so keep it out of the engine bay or unventilated enclosures that bake above 70°C.
