The 24 mA source and sink rating is the standard drive strength for this logic family. It will cleanly switch a 50 pF load at 100 MHz with reasonable edge rates, but if the bus runs longer than a few inches or fans out to more than eight loads, the designer should budget for signal-integrity simulation. The 3-state output control lets multiple transceivers share the same bus lines without contention, which is the usual case in a memory or peripheral data bus.
