74ALS bus transceiver for 5 V backplanes
It combines the speed of ALS with the drive capability needed for buffered backplane or memory-interface applications — sourcing 15 mA and sinking 24 mA per output. The 3-state outputs let multiple transceivers share a common bus without contention when the output enable is deasserted.
5 V supply rail — legacy system fit
It is a straightforward drop-in for 74LS or 74F transceiver sockets in existing designs, but it will not work in 3.3 V or lower-voltage buses without external level translation. The single-element, 8-bit-wide architecture matches standard 8-bit data-path widths in older microcontrollers, peripheral controllers, and ISA-style buses.
20-SOIC wide-body — rework-friendly footprint
Housed in a 20-SOIC wide-body package (0.295-inch body width, 7.50 mm), this transceiver uses a standard JEDEC footprint. The wide body gives good thermal relief under hot air — will it survive the hot air? Yes, the leads are on 1.27 mm pitch with plenty of copper area on each pad, so rework is straightforward.
Active lifecycle — no obsolescence worry
For a BOM line, this means no near-term supply risk and no forced redesign.
Commercial temperature grade — indoor environments
It is not specified for industrial or automotive thermal ranges — if the board sees -40°C or +85°C, look at the 74ABT or 74LVTH families instead.
