Quad XOR in a DIP — TTL-threshold 5V logic
The SN74AHCT86N packs four independent 2-input XOR gates in a single 14-pin DIP. Each gate performs the exclusive-OR function: the output goes high when the two inputs differ. This makes it a natural fit for parity generators/checkers, data comparators, and controlled inversion in 5V digital systems. It belongs to the 74AHCT family — Advanced High-Speed CMOS with TTL-compatible input thresholds. The low threshold is 0.8V max, the high threshold is 2V min, so it directly replaces or interfaces with 5V TTL logic without a level translator.
Speed, drive, and standby — what the numbers mean
Maximum propagation delay is 8.8 ns at 5V with a 50 pF load. That sets the usable clock rate: a path through two XORs in series eats ~17.6 ns, leaving margin for a 30 MHz clock. For a single-gate path, the data sheet typical is lower, but the 8.8 ns max is the number to budget for timing closure across temperature and voltage. Output drive is 8 mA sink and 8 mA source. Quiescent current is 2 µA max. With all inputs held at valid logic levels, the gate draws almost nothing from the 5V rail — useful in battery-backed or always-on logic sections where every microamp counts.
Package, temperature grade, and compliance
It fits standard breadboards and perforated prototyping boards, and is hand-solderable for rework or low-volume builds. The supplier device package is 14-PDIP. Not qualified for automotive or extended temperature, but fine for controlled indoor or ventilated enclosures. Texas Instruments lists this as an active product with ROHS3 compliance — no lead or restricted substances.
