Octal bus transceiver with 2V–5.5V supply — the design-fit decision
The Texas Instruments SN74AHC245DW is an octal (8-bit) bus transceiver from the 74AHC family, designed for bidirectional data flow between two buses with non-inverting logic and 3-state outputs. Its supply range of 2V to 5.5V means it can bridge 3.3V and 5V logic domains directly, without external level shifters, as long as the bus voltages fall within that window. The 8mA symmetric output drive (both high and low) is typical for the AHC logic family — enough to drive short PCB traces, a few CMOS inputs, or a single TTL load, but not backplanes or long cables. The single-element, 8-bit-per-element architecture makes it a drop-in for standard 74x245-style bus interfaces.
It can sit in a factory automation panel, an outdoor telecom cabinet, or an engine-bay ECU where the ambient temperature stays within that range. The 125°C ceiling is the junction temperature limit — board designers should derate power dissipation for the 20-SOIC package when running near the upper end.
For dual-sourcing resilience, the 74AHC family has multiple qualified sources (TI, Nexperia, ON Semiconductor) producing functionally identical parts under the same base number — qualify the alternate now to avoid single-source exposure.
