The 2V to 5.5V supply range lets this part bridge 3.3V and 5V domains without a level translator, provided the input thresholds align. The 8mA output drive per pin (both high and low) is enough for CMOS logic fan-out of 10–15 loads or driving a standard LED through a current-limiting resistor, but not for relays or high-current loads.
For new designs, the 74AHC family remains a standard-logic workhorse; no immediate second-source concern, though the through-hole PDIP package is less common in high-volume surface-mount builds.
