Quad 2-input XOR in 14-SOIC — 5 V logic workhorse
The SN74ACT86D: Each of the four independent gates accepts two inputs and delivers a standard 24 mA sink/source output drive, enough to fan out to up to ten 74LS loads without a buffer. The 9.5 ns max propagation delay at 5 V and 50 pF sets the data-rate ceiling — at 50 MHz the output still settles within one clock period, but the actual toggle rate at the receiver will be lower once the load capacitance and trace delay are factored in.
Supply rail and input thresholds — 5 V TTL compatibility
Input logic-low threshold is 0.8 V max, and logic-high is 2 V min — these levels are directly compatible with standard 5 V TTL outputs (which guarantee VOH ≥ 2.4 V and VOL ≤ 0.4 V), so no level translation is needed when driving from a 74LS or 74HCT source. Quiescent current is just 4 µA max, so the gate's own draw is negligible in a mixed-signal board where the 5 V rail also powers an ADC or op-amp. The 24 mA output drive is symmetric — the same current capability for both high and low states — which simplifies timing analysis because the rise and fall times into a given load are roughly equal.
Temperature grade and storage — industrial range, dry storage
The 14-SOIC package is not moisture-sensitive per J-STD-020 at MSL 1, so standard dry storage is sufficient; no bake-out required before reflow if the shelf life has been respected.
Board-fit and footprint — 14-SOIC, no surprises
Surface-mount only; no through-hole variant exists in this series. Supplied in tube packaging — not tape-and-reel. For automated pick-and-place, the tube can be loaded into a tube feeder or the parts can be transferred to a tape carrier. If your line runs only reel-fed, request a reel quote at RFQ time.
