What this 74ACT buffer does on a 5V bus
The 3-state outputs let you float the bus when the chip is deselected — useful for shared data lines in memory-mapped I/O or backplane designs.
The 24 mA symmetric drive means you can fan out to eight standard LSTTL loads per output without extra buffering, keeping the BOM count low. The 5 V supply rail also matches legacy 5 V microcontrollers and ASICs still common in retrofit and maintenance spares.
The 74ACT family is a mature logic series, but TI continues to manufacture it for the industrial and telecom aftermarket.
