Hex inverter in a 14-SOIC footprint
The SN74ACT04DR is a Texas Instruments 74ACT-series hex inverter — six independent NOT gates in a single 14-SOIC package. Each gate inverts a single input to its complement, a fundamental logic function for signal conditioning, clock buffering, and control-line polarity inversion. The 24 mA symmetrical output drive (both source and sink) handles fan-out to multiple downstream loads without external buffers. Propagation delay maxes at 8.5 ns into a 50 pF load at 5 V — fast enough for most 5 V logic buses running below 50 MHz, but the actual toggle rate depends on the capacitive load of the trace and input pins on the receiving side.
Quiescent draw and input thresholds
Quiescent current is 2 µA max — negligible for battery-backed or always-on logic sections; the supply rail sees essentially no standing current from the inverter chain when the inputs are static. Input logic-low threshold is 0.8 V, high threshold is 2 V at 5 V supply. These are TTL-compatible levels: a 3.3 V logic output driving a 5 V ACT input sees the low threshold met but the high side may need a pull-up to guarantee >2 V at the receiver.
