What the 40 mA sink rating means for your load
The SN7407D is a hex non-inverting buffer with open-collector outputs — each of the six channels can sink up to 40 mA when the output is low, but cannot source current when high. This means the output transistor pulls the line to ground; an external pull-up resistor to the supply rail defines the logic-high voltage level. This limits the part to indoor, temperature-controlled environments — not suitable for automotive or outdoor enclosures without additional thermal management.
14-SOIC footprint and board integration
The tube delivery means the parts arrive in anti-static tubes, not tape-and-reel — factor this into pick-and-place setup if you're running high-volume reels. Six independent buffer elements in one package saves board space compared to six discrete transistors or single-gate parts. Each element has one input and one output; the open-collector output allows wired-OR connections on a shared bus without contention.
The part belongs to the 7400 series, a long-running logic family.
