Industrial RS-485 bus transceiver in 8-SOIC
At 250 kbps the SN65HVD888DR is slew-rate limited, which keeps radiated emissions low on unshielded twisted-pair cable and allows longer stub lengths than a full-speed RS-485 part. This is the right tier for Modbus RTU, BACnet MS/TP, and similar fieldbus protocols that top out at 115.2 kbps or 250 kbps. If your design requires 1 Mbps or higher (e.g., Profibus), you would step up to a different transceiver in the 65HVD family.
Receiver hysteresis — noise budget on the cable
The 60 mV of receiver hysteresis sets the input switching threshold deadband, preventing the output from chattering when the differential bus voltage sits near the threshold. On a typical RS-485 bus with termination resistors and common-mode noise from motor drives, this margin buys you reliable data without external biasing resistors or a separate fail-safe circuit. The hysteresis value is fixed — no external adjustment — so the board layout just needs the standard 120 Ω termination at each end of the stub.
This part is not AEC-Q100 qualified; for automotive-rated RS-485, look at the SN65HVD88x-Q1 variants.
No PCN watch is needed for this part today, but as with any active semiconductor, the BOM should include a qualified second source if the design is long-life.
