250 kbps half-duplex — the speed that fits industrial fieldbuses
The Texas Instruments SN65HVD82DR is an RS-422/RS-485 half-duplex transceiver rated for 250 kbps, with a single driver and single receiver in an 8-SOIC package. The 60 mV of receiver hysteresis helps reject noise on long twisted-pair runs, making this part a common choice for PLC-to-sensor links, VFD communication ports, and building-automation fieldbus nodes where the bus speed stays under 250 kbps.
The 250 kbps data rate sets the maximum switching frequency on the differential bus — at this speed the cable-length limit is roughly 1200 m for RS-485, assuming standard 24 AWG twisted pair. The 60 mV hysteresis reduces the chance of the receiver toggling on noise when the bus is idle or lightly loaded — a useful margin on long stubs.
