At 400 kbps this transceiver is in the mid-speed tier of RS-485 parts. It is fast enough for Modbus RTU at 115.2 kbps with margin, or for a Profibus DP link at the lower baud rates. The full-duplex architecture means separate transmit and receive pairs, so the bus never needs to turn around — useful for continuous data streaming or poll-response cycles where every microsecond of dead time matters. If your application needs 1 Mbps or higher, look at the SN65HVD72 or SN65HVD78 family; those parts run at 20 Mbps and 50 Mbps respectively but share the same 10-VSSOP footprint.
It is not a 5 V-tolerant part, so if your existing bus transceivers are 5 V, this is a different supply domain. No derating needed up to the maximum; the receiver hysteresis stays at 70 mV across temperature.
For BOM planning, this is a stable line item with no forced migration risk.
